Barone's gem goes for naught in 2-1 loss to EP

Marcus Barone allowed just five hits and two runs over six innings but Chester Bird managed juste three hits and one run in a 2-1 loss at Eden Prairie.

Jimmy Heck led off the game with a walk for The Birds and, one out later, scored on a Joe Melles double. However, Eden Prairie pitched David Mingo would go six and one-third innings before allowing another hit as shut down Chester Bird with a three hitter.

The Eagles got single runs in the first, on a one-out home run by Brett Guba, and the second, on a bases-loaded single by Dave Belusky. However, Barone pitched out of trouble, stranding six runners over the first three inning, while needing 68 pitches.

From that point, he would need just 38 pitches over the final three innings allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three.

However, Mingo was cruising along, allowing just two walks while working on a one-hitter until he got two outs in the seventh inning.

Jack McGinn reached Mingo with a pinch-hit single to left-center field and Grant Besse followed with a pinch-hit single up the middle, putting the potential tying run on third base, before Mingo recorded his 10th strikeout to end the game.

In taking the loss, Barone pitched his second consecutive complete game, allowing two runs on five hits while walking four and striking out six.

The Birds begin play in the annual Moose Country Classic wood bat tournament Friday, by facing South St. Paul at 4 p.m., at Henry Sibley High School. Saturday, Chester Bird plays back-to-back games with a 10 a.m. game versus Hamline Purple at St. Thomas Academy, followed by a 12:15 p.m. game with tournament-host West St. Paul.
