Chester Bird took a five-run lead after the fourth inning but gave up an 11-run sixth inning to Fridley in a 19-10 non-league loss.
Suffering from a depleted pitching staff after six games in four days, The Birds turned to Jack McGinn for his first American Legion start and, after a five-run second inning, he settled in to give his team a chance to take a 10-5 lead.
Chester Bird got jump started in the first inning with a three-run home run from Gabe MacDonald but The Birds needed two more runs in the second to tie the game.
Newcomers Sam Lynch and Keaton Studsrud led off the inning by reaching on a walk and an error, respectively. Lynch scored on a bases-loaded walk to Joe Melles and Studsrud tied the game by racing home on a wild pitch.
The five-run fourth featured RBI singles by John Kernan and Spencer Shaver as The Birds carried a 10-5 lead into the fifth inning.
Fridley scored once in the top of the fifth, McGinn's last inning of work, before exploding for 11 runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
The Birds return to South Hennepin League play with a 6 p.m. game, Tuesday, at Richfield, before breaking for the Fourth of July weekend.
