Gabe MacDonald hit his team-leading third home run of the
season versus Eden Prairie.

After the Eagles took the early five-run lead, scoring four runs with two out, The Birds responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame despite the fact that Eden Prairie starting pitcher Cameron Mingo struck out four batters. Two of those strikeout victims reached base safely and both Joe Melles, who led off with a walk, and Gabe MacDonald, who struckout, would come around to score with Matt Ambre grounding out to drive in the first run.
Two innings later, the Eagles added two more runs but The Birds responded with three of their own as MacDonald singled to lead off the fourth and, one out later, stole second base. He scored on a two-out single by Mikey McGill, who advanced to third when Sam Lynch singled. Marcus Barone then bunted for a base hit to bring home McGill and Keaton Studsrud collected Chester Bird's fourth consecutive hit, an RBI single which scored Lynch.
The sixth inning proved to be fateful for The Birds' starting pitcher Willie Faulk, as he gave up three hits to start the inning, which led to a pair of runs, and saw his pitch count run to 121 before giving way to Scott Quinby, who got the final out of the inning with one pitch.
The Eagles would then put up three runs in the seventh inning off of Quinby and, trailing by seven runs, Chester Bird could only respond with MacDonald's solo home run with two out in the bottom of the seventh.
MacDonald finished the night with two hits, an RBI and three runs scored while Sam Lynch also chipped in with two.
The Birds return to action Friday when they open play in the Lakeview Classic, hosted by Duluth Lakeview Post 342, with a 12:30 p.m. game in Superior, Wis., versus Thunder Bay. Chester Bird will face Superior at 8 p.m. Friday and finish pool play when it faces Proctor in a 12:30 p.m. game at Cloquet.
