Long day for Birds results in a pair of losses

Chester Bird suffered a nine-inning loss in game one and ran out of pitching and suffered a 10-run loss in game two as it wrapped up the weekend with a 4-3 loss to Cooper and a 12-2 loss to Wayzata.

The day started out well for The Birds as they scored an unearned run in the top of the first and Spencer Shaver's two-run homer in the third game them a 3-1 lead.

However, 18 strikeouts and 16 runners left on base would prove to be costly as they did not score after the third inning.

Chester Bird left the bases loaded in the second, third and ninth innings and eight of its 18 strikeouts were called third strikes.

Marcus Barone turned in a solid pitching performance, allowing three runs, two of which were earned in seven innings. He gave up six hits while walking two and striking out seven.

The second game of the day saw The Birds fell behind, 9-0, after two innings. Grant Besse reached on a one-out single and eventually scored on Joe Melles' sacrifice fly out. Their other run came in the fifth inning when Robby Sutherland laid down his second bunt hit of the day and eventually scored on a Greg Zeman base hit.

Chester Bird's South Hennepin League game Monday, at Eden Prairie, has been postponed and a make up date has not been determined. The Birds return home Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game with St. Louis Park.
