Birds rally in seventh to claim season opener

Jimmy Heck tossed a four-hit complete game and Chester Bird scored all three of its runs in the seventh inning to claim a 3-2 win over Bloomington Blue in the 2012 season opener.

Blue got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Tony Robinson led off the frame by reaching base on an error, moved to second on J.T. Ott's sacrifice but and eventually scored from second base on a two-out infield throwing error.

The fifth inning began the same way as Robinson found himself on second base with one out. Nathan Okonek then doubled down the right field line to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Bloomington pitcher Erik Monson cruised through the first five innings, needing just 57 pitches as he shut out The Birds on just three hits. However, he needed 48 more pitches and would not retire a batter in the seventh inning.

That seventh inning saw Marcus Barone reach on a fielding error to lead off the inning and John Backes followed with a single. Robby Sutherland then laid down a bunt and reached base when catcher James Harsch throw to third base failed to retire Barone.

Sam Lynch then singled to left center to drive in Barone and Dan Labosky greeted relief pitcher Jackson Miller with a bases-loaded bunt single to bring home Backes with the tying run. Keaton Studsrud then drove the next pitch to deep center field, resulting in a sacrifice fly which delivered Sutherland with the game-winning run.

Heck walked three and struck out three in a 110-pitch outing  Both of the runs he allowed were unearned.

The Birds return to action for a non-league game at home, Sunday, when they face St. Francis at 12 noon.
