The Birds' three-run rally in the seventh inning began when Greg Zeman singled off the glove of pitcher Matt Sinderson and Melles doubled over the head of centerfielder Michael Larson.
A wild pitch plated Zeman and Shaver walked and stole second to set up the winning run. Bennett Jasmin came on in relief at that point and struck out John Kernan before giving up MacDonald's winning hit.
Kenny Polarek worked the first five innings for Chester Bird on the mound, allowing five runs, three of which were earned on eight hits with one walk. Jimmy Heck allowed just one hit over the final two innings to pick up the victory.
Zeman went 3-for-3 and scored twice to pace The Birds offensively.
Chester Bird has a busy weekend ahead with three games at Wayzata on the slate. The Birds face Robbinsdale Armstrong at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, before 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. games versus Robbinsdale Cooper and Wayzata, Sunday.
Monday's scheduled league game with Eden Prairie has been postponed as the Eagles' high school team qualified for next week's state tournament. No date has been set for a makeup at this time.
